1930s Depression Era Handmade “Make-do” Flannel Blouse
This handmade 1930s Depression Era “make-do” blouse beautifully exemplifies the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the time that we love so much. It is crafted from repurposed flannel fabric and the majority of the blouse was hand-sewn. There are some masterfully-done visible hand repairs throughout. The silhouette is quite boxy and cropped with short sleeves. The blouse is constructed of a boldly colored plaid fabric in yellow, pink, green and navy hues, and is adorned with a dark navy blue collar, likely repurposed from another garment. Button closure down the center and one hook and eye closure at the neckline near the collar. This blouse is extremely comfortable, soft and ready for everyday wear but is also a true work of utilitarian art in light of one of America’s most challenging and dark times, and is one of a kind.
