World War I Red Cross Military Issued Knit Balaclava

$120.00

This WWI Red Cross knit balaclava is an excellent example of the functional, handmade gear provided for soldiers who served in the First World War. The balaclava is made of tightly knit wool, which was chosen for its warmth, durability and moisture resistance. The olive/khaki color was typical of military gear from that period, chosen for its camouflage properties in battlefield settings. The knitting is even and precise, and items like this were often crafted by Red Cross volunteers. The original owners name stitched along the inside for the purpose of soldiers retaining their personal items in the chaos of war. The balaclava is in wonderful worn and loved shape.
